It is an unfortunate fact that home improvement contractors lead the list of complaints filed with Better Business Bureau (BBB) offices across the country. It is simply to tempting – and too easy – for unscrupulous contractors to take advantage of unsuspecting homeowners. That’s why we urge you to “do your homework” before hiring ANY Maryland company to do any work on your home.

Here are a few things you can do to protect yourself:

Check references, especially customers who have hired the contractor in the past year or two
Call the Better Business Bureau to find out about the company’s rating and whether or not they have any outstanding complaints
Make sure the company has a valid contractor license from the State of Maryland
Insist on getting a current “certificate of insurance” to provide proof of insurance coverage
